Leichter als 21 Gramm 2008
(Werkgruppe)

Präparierte Schmetterlinge und Falter, Lasercut /
Dissected butterfly, butterfly case (wood, foam, glass); 5 × 42 × 51 cm

No. 3: Collection Museo Cantonale d`Arte Lugano

Leichter als 21 Gramm [Lighter than 21 Grams] work group, death’s heads are engraved on the wings of different butterflies and two moths with a laser. The title of the work refers to controversial research by Duncan Mac Dougall, a late 19th century American doctor who attempted to prove that the human soul was material and measurable. The image of the butterfly is widespread as a symbol of the soul, and anchored in various cultures. But dark-coloured butterflies and moths are also seen as harbingers of death.
